Summary of your project

Introduction

Based on the lessons learnt from the previous Youth Exchange the core activities will include material collection and discussion on the above themes. During the event workshops will lead to the production of a declaration on youth and epilepsy.

The 'youth declaration' will be presented to the European Parliament and the governments of the participating countires. The declaraction will cover the issues, of health, insurance, work and driving. The declaration will be developed through a series of plenary morning workshops presented by different countries working in pairs.

There will also be several opportunities to learn each other's languages. Formally this will be organised by: firstly, a plenary workshop on the first day for everyone to learn a few phrases of Spanish; secondly, each evening at dinner we learn a few phrases of the language of the country being presented that night (Just ten phrases - hello, goodbye, what's your phone number, can I see you again ... that sort of thing); thirdly, each lunch time we are paired with someone from a different language and we learn a few phrases from them e.g. pass the salt, how's the food? etc. .

Cultural nights will be presented by each particpating country. The evening will start off with another countrys view of the presenting country folloed by the reality. In addition each country will present something about what it is like to have epilepsy in that country and a description of the youth group activities. Cultural / entertainment activities may be traditional or modern.

In the afternoons of the first week there are other workshops related to personal development - these will be presented by the participants and people from the previous meeting. Anyone can present a workshop if they have some skills they would like to pass on to others. e.g. basketball, Cheerleading etc.

The place we will be meeting in and staying in is more than large enough for our group and we will have the place to ourselves. It is on the outskirts of Santiago but close to a sports facility and shops. There will be opportunties to go down into Santiago and at the end of the week we will move to a country lodge for the last couple of nights.

The youth group will be composed of 40 young people with epilepsy and 10 staff several of whom also have epilepsy. We do not wish to exclude people with active epilepsy from the group as these are the people who may benefit most from the experience and who will have the most to contribute. We learnt from the previous Youth Exchange that this was possible and rewarding for all the participants. Young people with less-privileged socio-economic backgrounds are given preference.
