LAYE Trekking activity

When the workshops were over, it was time for some physical activities. So two days were set apart especially for these. The activities included canoeing, trekking, cycling and climbing. So everyone had to choose his/her favourite two to participate in.

www.adlerwarte-berlebeck.deThe trekking activity was very interesting. After driving for about 45 minutes (during which we all wondered whether Germans actually knew what trekking meant!), we finally got to Detmold. There, next to the Teutoburger Forest lies the Adlerwarte Berlebeck, the oldest and largest bird-of-prey centre in Europe. There, whilst enjoying a marvellous view of the forest we watched a show with some pretty big birds. This was, for most of us a first experience likewise, and it was a quite enjoyable one. The falcons, eagles, vultures and other birds were simply fascinating. (more info at the link with clicking on the picture above)

www.hermannsdenkmal.deThe next part was a 5km uphill walk through the woods to the Hermannsdenkmal monument in Hiddesen, near Detmold. This is a monument in memory of the battle in Teutoburger Forest in the year 9A.D. It stands on the 386m high Grotenburg since 1875 and was erected by Ernst Von Bandel. Our next visit was the Externsteine rocks, a chain of towering sandstone spires with carvings and small grottos at the bottom. The temple was constructed according to astronomical orientations and was used for pagan and non-pagan worship. Getting on top of it was no mean feat, as we had to climb over a hundred steps twice! An ice-cream brought an end to a lovely day;-)

We doing real good!
